As some of you know that have read my previous posts, I have been battling a case of cappilaria that won't go away. I've used Safeguard and Valbazen, and the birds are still testing positive. It has been recommended that I try Levamisol, but I cannot find it under the trade names Tramisol of Levasole. My Ag supply store checked with 5 of their suppliers and all said that it has been off the market for the last 3-4 years. Farmer Green said he had purchased Levamisol from Foy's Pigeon Supply. I ordered some and it arrived yesterday. It has the trade name Vermisol, and the ingredient is Lemamisol hydrochloring 7.5. It says on the bottle that it is a worming preparation for pigeons.
Does anyone have any experience with this medication? I am confused by the directions. The bottle says to give 4 tsp per 1 gallon of water. repeat after 14 days. Do not feed 24 hours before and 4 hours after. No mention of how long to leave the water down.
On their website it says "The powder is 4 teaspoons per gallon for one day. Repeat in 10-12 days. The powder contains 7.5 grams of Levamisole." When they say withhold food for 24 hours before and 4 hours after, and duration of medication is 1 day, is one day a 24 hour period? If so, then am I to withhold food for 24 hours prior to giving the medicated water, the 24 hours that they have the water and then an additional 4 hours, so that they are without food for 52 hours? Sounds like a long time to go without food.
I don't know whether to give per the instructions on the Vermisol bottle, or to use the instructions from the UPA site and dose like Tramisol. I don't want to give this without some benefit of someone's experience? Anyone used this?
Alternatively, does anyone know where to purchase Tramisol or Levasole?

I have used Levamisole hydrochoride soluable PIG WORMER for my peafowls but do NOT
know dosage for other types (for sheep or pigeons).
The pig wormer is used at one ounce per gallon of drinking water for peafowls penned so
that they can not find other water--and, of course, you do not do your worming on a
rainy day when they can find puddles.
To get this wormer try Jeffers. They are in Alabama and will ship phone

Hi Cheeptrix, I thought I'd share how I used the Levamisole I got from Foys. My Java was at deaths door so I had to act fast to save him. I mixed 2 teaspoons in 1 cup of water. I then used a needleless syringe and put a syringe full right down his throat. It saved his life. Then I used 4 teaspoons in a gallon of water to medicate the rest of the flock. I just put it in the only water source and let them drink until it was time to change the water again. I did not with hold any food. My friend told me that capillary worms wrap around the birds esopogus and it can't eat. My bird was literally starving to death. The next day my Java was eating all he could find. But mine had a severe case. So it may be different for birds that are not quite as bad. I trust my friends advice as she has raised peafowl for over 40 years. She just has the attitude that if its dying anyways what have you got to lose by trying any and everything. I was like you....everything had to be measured exactly right...every rule followed...and then I learned. Now when I worm my flock I no longer measure out EXACTLY 5cc's per gallon. I pour some from the bottle and let it go. Kinda like cooking..just a pinch of that or a dollop of this. I believe in exact science, but sometimes plain old common sense prevails. Just get some in them and kill the worms. GOOD LUCK!!!
PS: I also gave my Java another syringe full down the throat 1 week later to make sure I got them all. He is now a Very Healthy, Beautiful young Java male. _________________ FarmerGreen........ We are so Soon Old and So Late SMART.... |

I do a dilution based on estimated bird weight and then use bread to soak up the wormer and feed the bread while keeping track of who eats what. Most of my birds will hand feed which makes it easier. I know for sure that my birds are wormed & don't have to wonder. _________________ Rancho Escondido

Thanks for all the suggestions. I followed Farmer Greens directions and put 4 tsp in a gallon of water. I did not withhold food. The reason it was recommended (this is marketed for pigeons) is that it can cause vomiting. I checked on them this evening, and asked if anyone had a queezy tummy, and they all jumped up and down and said "no Ma'm". So I guess all is OK. I will take yet another fecal sample to the vet next week and see if it tests clear. I'll follow up in 10 days with another dose of the Lemamisole just to be safe.

I'm NOT about to argue with anyone on the dosages for I have trouble breaking down stock solutions to 1 gallon dosages and smaller , period.
However, I did ask a supplier of Levasole 52 gr. pack and they told me : 1/4 teaspoon per gallon for one day.
I rest my ( and their's ) case. |
